”Grom” Means Young Surfer

Pete was the Surf Team Dad and mentor to the young surfers of the Oregon North Coast. So, they called him the "Grom Father." When the surf was up, the Groms would pile into his van, and they would drive the coast looking for the optimal break that day. Pete never let the Groms down.

Grom (noun): A young surfer, often eager to learn, explore, and find their place in the waves.

Who was the grom father?

To the young surfers of Oregon's North Coast, Pete “Buck” Shea was more than a coach or mentor. He was their Surf Team Dad, their biggest supporter, and a constant source of encouragement both in and out of the water. Affectionately known as “The GromFather,” Pete dedicated his time to helping the next generation of surfers grow, not only in their abilities but also in their confidence, character, and love for the ocean.

When the surf was up, the Groms would pile into Pete's van, and together they'd travel the coastline in search of the perfect break. But for Pete, these adventures were about so much more than catching waves. They were opportunities to teach, inspire, build friendships, and share the lessons that only the ocean could offer.

Pete believed in those kids, celebrated their successes, and encouraged them to face challenges with courage and determination. They weren't just young surfers he mentored; they were an important part of his life, and he was an unforgettable part of theirs.

The name “Grom Father” became a reflection of the love, guidance, and sense of belonging Pete gave to the young surfers who looked up to him. Today, the Grom Father Foundation carries that same spirit forward, using adventure, connection, and the healing power of nature to make a difference in the lives of others.

PETE'S EULOGY

Eulogy for Peter Ryan Buck Shea

Peter Ryan Buck Shea was born the youngest of three boys into an Irish Catholic family. Growing up, the Shea brothers were like three bear cubs, always playing together, wrestling, and hunting for adventure. We pushed each other to be better, fiercely competitive, never backing down, taking on all challengers. We thought we were invincible. As the third boy, Buck had to keep up, but he always did. He was gifted with an abnormal Bam Bam-like strength, the fierce focus and determination of a hawk on the hunt, and the ancient wisdom of an old soul with a heart of gold.
